| Patricia Hemstreet F | Signed on: Sun 25 Nov 2007 14:52:11 EST My father, John(jack)J Hemstreet was in the 95th..while visiting my brother in California over thanksgiving, my brother brought out my dad's scrapbook. He drove a truck, but was in combat we believe. As my father died in 1983..we never discussed the war, like all of these unbelievably brave men. Did anyone know my Dad? |
| Joe Froggatt & Famil | Signed on: Thu 22 Nov 2007 13:30:13 EST First let me say thank you to my heroes, The Iron Men of Metz. My father, Tom Froggatt, was in G Company, 379th, 95th Division for what he himself described as "the whole damn works". He was drafted in May 1943 and was able to get into the ASTP or Army Special Training Program although he was just a poor plumber's apprentice from Philly. The ASTP was designed for the best and the brightest to be extensively trained in the more highly specialized military arts but the high casualties in Europe saw the dissolution of the ASTP and the participants were parcelled out to combat divisions. My Dad ended up with the 95th and went all the way from mountain climbing training in West Virginia to England and eventually into Germany itself for the surrender in May 1945. And back. Like 99.9% of the veterans who saw the ETO during WWII ( and the Pacific too) my Dad rarely spoke of his experiences. I have some mementoes he left including a notebook/diary he kept with names and serial numbers of the men in his platoon. I also found some photographic negatives and had them developed. They clearly show him and several others "somewhere in Holland" I think. I have positively identified one of the others as Warren Christian from Greenville, SC. Heard of either of these guys????????? ALL of the veterans of the WWII era are my heroes, though I am very proud to be the son of one of the Iron Men of Metz !!!! |
| Alvin Smolin | Signed on: Tue 20 Nov 2007 14:38:50 EST I was a member of the 378th Infantry Regiment, Company C. I guess there are few of us left. I was glad to receive an email telling me of the new web site. I just retired at the young age of 93. Is there anyone from our regiment who lives in or may visit the the New York metropolitan area? I live in Teaneck, New Jersey. It would be great to meet. |
